The White Lotus Metta Scholarship was first launched on 13 April 2025 in collaboration with the Burma Buddhist Association of Ontario (BBAO). The name reflects purity, hope, and compassion rooted in the Buddhist tradition, while honoring the late Dr. Daw Phyu Phyu Khin, former Board Director of BBAO and the scholarship’s main sponsor and donor, who once walked the same path as a student from Burma studying and completing her PhD at a Canadian university. Her firsthand experience with the challenges faced by international student, particularly those from Burma, inspired the creation of this scholarship, including adapting to harsh weather conditions, adjusting to cultural differences, living away from family, and managing the high cost of education and living expenses.
The White Lotus Metta Scholarship has two main objectives. First, it aims to provide financial assistance to eligible students of Burmese origin pursuing post-secondary education in Ontario, Canada. Second, it seeks to encourage scholarship recipients to occasionally volunteer in religious activities and events organized at Mahadhammika Temple, thereby supporting the long-term sustainability and continued growth of the Buddhist temple community.
This initiative aims to provide financial aid while encouraging academic excellence, community involvement, and cultural contributions among Burmese-origin students in Ontario. The scholarship awards CA$2,000 to five recipients per year, with the opportunity for continued support in subsequent years, subject to reapplication and continued eligibility.
Eligible applicants must:
• Be currently enrolled in a college or university in Ontario, Canada.
• Be a student of Burmese origin, demonstrating “smart and capable” character.
• Be actively involved in the Burmese Canadian community through volunteering activities.
Applicants are required to submit the following:
1. Proof of Enrolment
2. Two Referees (Academic Referee and Community Referee)
3. Academic Record

2. A completed application form, along with two reference letters: one from your TA, lecturer, or professor at your current school, and another from a member of the Burmese community who can attest to your volunteer service.
Notes:
(i) The applicant cannot use any member of the Scholarship Committee as a reference.
(ii) The referee will be approached and provided with the "Reference Form" by the Co-Selection Chair directly, either an electronic copy or a printed copy, up to the referee’s preference. Referees must send the reference letters directly to the Selection Committee.
(iii) If the referee prefers providing the reference over the phone, a designated person from the Selection Committee will set up the phone appointment before making the call.
3. Academic Record: Copies of transcripts or other proof of academic performance issued by educational institutions in Canada, as well as any special awards or recognitions received from the institution, if available
4. Identification: A copy of the applicant’s passport or a government-approved acceptable identity document.

The selection process will assess:
• Academic performance and enrollment status
• Volunteer/community involvement and contributions to the Burmese Canadian community

• Strength of references and evidence of smart and capable character.
